Travelers Aid of Metropolitan Atlanta Provides

Immediate Response to Hurricane Katrina Relief Efforts

September 26, 2005

To date, Travelers Aid of Metropolitan Atlanta has provided direct emergency services including lodging, food, gas cards and referrals to nearly 9,000 individuals and 3,000 families in the three and a half weeks following the devastating wrath of Hurricane Katrina in the Gulf Coast region.  The provision of these services has been a monumental task for an agency that normally serves 9,000 people on an annual basis.  While the last few weeks have been demanding on our staff and depleted our resources, we are proud to continue to provide emergency services, just as we have done since our doors opened in 1900.

“We are a small but very effective, efficient and thorough agency,” says Edward Powers, Executive Director of Travelers Aid of Metropolitan Atlanta.  “We don’t have the name recognition of larger agencies, but we get the job done and can change directions on a moments notice based on the changing needs of the Gulf Coast evacuees.  The process has become a collaborative effort calling in resources from around the city to put the agency’s emergency plan into action.”

Supported by volunteers from Fulton County’s Department of Human Resources and concerned citizens, financial support from the United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta, the Fulton County Government/Commission, Dekalb County, City of Atlanta, Variety of Georgia and individual donors, the agency has been able to provide uninterrupted services to date.  However, none of us can predict what long-term effects the enormous number of evacuees will have on Travelers Aid and Atlanta.  That is why your assistance is greatly needed at this time.

Your financial contribution to support our work will help us continue to provide this level of service to those who so badly need our help in their greatest time of need.  To make a donation via our secure server or learn more about Travelers Aid of Metropolitan Atlanta, please visit our website at (www.travelersaidatlanta.org) or call 404-419-8042.
