Fulton County Commission Provides $150,000 Emergency Grant
to Travelers Aid of Metropolitan Atlanta
to provide assistance to Hurricane Katrina evacuees

At its meeting on Wednesday, September 7, 2005, the Fulton County Board of Commissioners approved a motion by Commissioner Lynne Riley to provide a $150,000 emergency grant to Travelers Aid of Metropolitan Atlanta. The grant will support Travelers Aid’s efforts to assist evacuees affected by Hurricane Katrina. The check was delivered to Edward Powers, Executive Director of Travelers Aid of Metropolitan Atlanta on Thursday, September 8^th.

“This is a tremendous show of support from the Fulton County Commissioners,” said Edward Powers. “We are very thankful for their recognition of our important work in the community and the needs of evacuees coming in from the Gulf Coast region. We don’t have the name recognition of larger agencies, but we get the job done and can change directions on a moments notice based on the changing needs of the Gulf Coast evacuees.”

“My colleagues and I hope that this grant will challenge other counties and local governments to match the support Fulton County is providing to Travelers Aid or other social service support organizations,” said Commissioner Riley. The Board selected Travelers Aid of Metropolitan Atlanta based on assessments made by staff on the demands made on Travelers Aid by evacuees with immediate housing needs.

Fulton County employees have also played a major role in meeting the daily volunteer needs of Travelers Aid.  The agency could not have handled the significant influx of evacuees without the professional assistance of these individuals on a daily basis for several weeks following Hurricane Katrina’s wrath of the Gulf Coast Region.
