A special note about combating homelessness ...

Over 318,000 people live at or below the poverty line in the Atlanta Region. In such a limited financial situation the loss of a job, an accident, a medical crisis, can all quickly lead to the complete depletion of resources and ultimately homelessness. At Travelers Aid of Metropolitan Atlanta, we are dedicated to the prevention of homelessness in our community and combating it whenever it arises. Our caseworkers create an individualized  action plan with each client that responds to their specific situation and needs. Once the immediate crisis has passed, a long-term plan is developed that can include employment training, credit counseling, budget management seminars, child-rearing classes, and a multitude of other opportunities designed to lead the family out of their poverty-stricken circumstances and break the cycle that leads to homelessness.

Emergency Shelter Hotel/Motel Program
Provides emergency housing for new resident families when there is no available
space at emergency shelters, or in counties where there is no emergency shelter facility.
This program is especially active when storms and other disasters hit the region.

Transitional Housing Program
Provides longer-term housing for new resident families, to give them the opportunity
to become financially stable and self-sufficient members of the metro Atlanta community.

Region-wide Travel Program
Assists new residents who need transportation assistance to return to their home
communities and/or support systems because remaining in the Atlanta area
would not be in their best interest.

Region-wide Outreach Program
Assists low-income new residents to the multi-county metro region with essential
aid in resettlement. (e.g., transportation, food, clothing, children's back-to-school
expenses, medical assistance).

First Month's Rent Program
Helps new residents with the acquisition of permanent housing
in the metro area, including assistance with security deposits and utilities.

Homeless Prevention Program
Offers a continuum of on-site services aimed at empowering clients to
become self-sufficient.

Battered Women's Program
Provides transportation and resettlement services to women who have fled situations
of domestic violence in other locations and are resettling in the Atlanta area.

HIV/AIDS Program
AIDS family reunification program provides resettlement assistance to persons
with HIV/AIDS who have come to Atlanta for medical treatment or to be near family
and/or support systems.

Breakfast with Santa Program
Photo 1
This is an annual event at the First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta to provide Holiday cheer
to children of low-income families living in homeless shelters and emergency transitional housing
during the holidays (i.e., not registered for other existing charitable outreach programs). It also
serves as a "family reunion" for families that have benefited from TAMA services in the past.
State Farm has been a regular supporter of this effort.
